Objectives / Success Criteria:
By the end of the lesson, pupils will be able to:- Identify at least 3 differences between life in the past and present by extracting information from a short text.
- Construct at least 3 simple sentences using “used to” or “didn’t use to” based on the stimulus with minimal teacher support.
Learning Outline:
Pre-lesson- Activity 1: Ask the pupils to close their eyes, listen carefully, and imagine the sound they're about to hear. Play short sound effects. Ask “Where can we hear this?”, “Is this from the past or now?”.
- Activity 2: Show pictures about life in Malaysia before and now. "Look at these pictures. What differences can you see?”, “Where can we see this?”.
Lesson delivery
- Activity 3: Teacher read aloud a short adapted paragraph about life in the past. “Listen carefully. Do not write. Just listen.” “Now read together with me.” Pupils repeat sentence by sentence. Asks the pupils to nod their head for "used to" sentences or shake head for "didn't use to" sentences. Discuss simple questions: “What is this text about?” “What happened now?” Expected Answers: “Life in the past and now.” “Differences.” “Before and today.”
- Activity 4: Paste 6 picture cards with scrambled sentence around the classroom. Divide class into small groups. Each group gets a table of 2 column (Past and Present). In groups, pupils walk (gallery walk) and unscramble the sentence from each picture and sort them into the right column. Reminds the pupils to use the correct punctuation. Teacher discusses the answers with the pupils.
- Activity 5: Teacher shows other pictures about life in the past and the present. Asks the pupils to write 3 new sentences using ‘used to’ or ‘didn’t use to’. They can use ideas from the pictures shown and manipulate structure from the answers discussed in Activity 4.
Post-lesson
- Activity 6: Asks the pupils to discuss in groups and share ONE sentence using ‘used to’ or 'didn't use to' with the class. Teacher also share the importance of keeping good values from the past. Give homework as enrichment.
