Objectives / Success Criteria:
By the end of the lesson, pupils will be able to:- Identify and understand at least 4–5 key words/phrases related to past events in sports (e.g. was happy, went swimming, wasn’t fun) by listening to short dialogues with 80% accuracy.
- Demonstrate comprehension by acting out or matching simple events in pairs/groups, showing correct use of was/were/went in short sentences.
Learning Outline:
Pre-lesson- Activity 1: Weekend Energy Stretch
Pupils stand in a circle. Teacher says different sports (football, badminton, swimming). Pupils act out a quick movement. Teacher asks: “How was it? Fun? Tiring?” Pupils respond with single words (fun, tiring, great). - Activity 2: Picture Talk (Malaysian Weekend Sports)
Show flashcards of Malaysian weekend sports scenes (family at park, kids at futsal, swimming pool). Pupils turn to partner and answer: “What did they do? Were they happy?”
- Activity 3: Guess the Feeling
Play short audio/dialogues about past weekend sports (adapted, simple). Pupils listen and raise “happy” or “sad” emoji cards. Teacher pauses to highlight phrases (was great, wasn’t fun). - Activity 4: Picture Talk
Divide class into small groups. Each group gets a dialogue card (“Last weekend I went to the park. It was fun.”). Pupils act it out with simple gestures. Audience guesses what sport/event it was. - Activity 5: Past Tense Sports Race
Word cards with verbs (play, go, swim, watch). Pupils must run to board and stick past tense forms (played, went, swam, watched) under correct picture. Groups earn points for speed and accuracy.
- Activity 6: Our Weekend
Pupils sit in circle. Teacher throws soft ball and asks: “What did you do last weekend? Was it fun?” Pupils answer in short sentences (I went swimming. It was great.). Class claps supportively after each response.
